Most of our Jewish neighbors were the type who measured Jewish authenticity by sense of humor and bagel order, rather than by commitment to Torah study or delight in the Sabbath (indeed, for this group, mild disdain for Jewish practice can be taken as a positive sign of Jewishness). True, it was less of a schlep to get a kosher chicken in Brooklyn Heights than it had been in London’s West End, but we still felt alone. The idyll turned out to be mostly mirage.
